Headshot styles and looks vary widely and there is no such thing as the "perfect" look to rule them all. Since personal taste strongly shapes our perceptions, we each interpret visuals and details based on our unique preferences and aesthetic sensibilities! Some may favor a certain style, others prefer a completely different look and feel. And while most of us have an idea what facial expression and which outfit make us look great, there is a bit more to consider for achieving a great headshot.

So, where do you start?

Unless you have specific requirements for a headshot look (typically a request to match a certain look on a company website), begin by exploring what you like. Have a look at our gallery or browse the world wide web to get inspiration. When you see something that aligns with your taste, pay attention to the expression, posture, lighting, framing, clothing and background color of that photo. Some colors of clothing and/or the backdrop can compliment a skin tone. Other colors - not so much. Opt for outfits that feel comfortable to you and reflect your personality or the industry you are in. Additionally, while you browse, consider the tone and mood conveyed in each photo, since those directly translate into a character and an overall image a person wishes to project. Remember, our personal style is a glimpse into our personality and a great headshot needs to reflect that!

PHOTO MOJO PREP!

How to get ready for a photoshoot:

Following these proven tips will contribute to a relaxed and confident presence in front of the camera, yielding stunning, natural photographs.

1. Effective communication: Given the brief nature of some of our shoots, effective communication is indeed key. Share your expectations, desired look and any specific preferences beforehand. Knowing your needs early on will help us tailor the session to meet your headshot goals, and to deliver the best results possible.

2. Prioritize rest for a fresh look: Aim to be at your best on the shoot day by getting sufficient rest. While the photographer can address certain issues in post-production, being well-rested ensures that you shine in every shot. (For those enthusiasts who want to celebrate their upcoming photo shoot ;-) a note of caution - it is best skip the pre-shoot nightcap, since alcohol can affect energy level and make skin tone appear dull.)

3. Plan for the shoot day: Despite a hectic schedule, try to plan your day carefully to avoid conflicting appointments. Planning outfits in advance will help to avoid last-minute stress.

4. Smart attire choices: Selecting the right outfit for your headshot can be challenging. Avoid prominent/bright patterns, reflective materials, high turtlenecks, distracting colors, and excessive jewelry. Steer clear of all-white clothing, as it may cause a loss of depth and detail in the photos. We are happy to provide guidance, so feel free to bring 1-2 other outfit options.

5. Subtle hair and makeup: Unless you're aiming at something very specific (-musicians, artists), it's best to opt for classic and understated hair and makeup choices. Avoid dramatic makeup colors, sparkly products, or shimmery finishes. Apply translucent powder to eliminate shine. Choose a hairstyle that has proven successful for you in the past.

6. Bring props! If time allows, we'll create another look for you in seconds! So, feel free to bring props that make the session uniquely you! Examples: hand watch, laptop, hair ties/clips to vary hairstyles, book (authors), binder, hats, scarves, musical instruments or other industry items (-artists/creatives, social media, web presence), etc. While props will be used for only certain headshot types, they oftentimes can help tell your story!

The Power of the First Impression

The primary purpose of a headshot is to leave an impression on its viewers. While personal tastes strongly shape perceptions of photographic styles, a professionally taken photo is indeed a direct glimpse into one's personality and professionalism.

It is not just a photo.

It is the first step of establishing connection. The reality in the professional world today is that people look at headshots as an effort one puts in to introduce themselves to their audience. Therefore headshots often become a deciding factor whether or not people take us seriously.

Some photographers use the term "crafted headshot". These days, it could seem like just a fancy term for an eye-catching title. In photography, however, it simply means that the look and feel of a portrait are often created during the process by working with an individual during the shoot. In other words, what works for one person may not work of another in the same situation. As a photographer, my goal is not only to achieve a look that stands out in the crowd, but also to capture who you really are. After all, nobody wants a headshot that looks stellar, but doesn't really portray who you are in real life as in "The Tale of the Misleading Headshot: A Comedy of Pixels."

A style and a look. Do they really matter?

The quick answer is - yes, because it is you marketing yourself and making the first impression! Your first impression is your personal branding, and it's no secret that both have a big say in today's highly-evolved world of digital communication. But even though personal branding has propelled a shift from generic portraits towards more unique headshots, authenticity has always been and will remain a key attribute. Therefore, today great headshots are considered to be the ones that emphasize genuine and natural smiles, approachable, yet competent persona and generally simple backgrounds! It all has to come together for a well-crafted headshot.
