DRESS FOR SUCCESS. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Clothing

Your choice of clothing should reflect your industry and personal style. Choose natural solid colors that complement your skin tone, and avoid busy patterns as they can distract from your face. Ensure your clothes are well-fitted and appropriate for the professional image you want to convey. For lighter skin it's best to avoid white, yellow, light pink, and any pastel or soft colors. For darker skin stay away from brown, black, or colder blues such as navy. You want to pop in your headshot! But neon colors just don't film well.

Gray in various shades generally works well for everyone. A great rule to go by is this: if you have blue eyes, bring blue tones; if you have green eyes, bring green tones; and if you have brown eyes, gray is a safe choice!

Grooming and hair

A well-groomed appearance is crucial for a great headshot. Pay attention to details such as clean, styled hair, and subtle makeup for a polished look. If you are not using a stylist, opt for natural colors. Be mindful that on camera makeup looks less prominent than in real life, so use slightly darker shades without overdoing it. What you want is a bit more contrast that is evenly applied, instead of heavy makeup. If possible, use oil-free (water or alcohol-based) makeup base and avoid "sheer" or glossy look unless you aim for fashion headshots. On the other hand for hair styling, you may want to use hair spray, gel or other hair products that can help tame frizz, add shine to your hair and make it look healthy. Men should consider grooming their facial hair to ensure that it enhances rather than detracts from their overall appearance.

Accessories

While accessories can add a personal touch, be mindful not to overdo it. Simple, classic accessories like a watch or a pair of earrings can complement your look without stealing the spotlight. Same goal applies - to enhance, not to distract.
